Craig picked up after a few rings.

“What’s up?” Guin asked him.

“I talked to Jack Rawlins. And I also had a chat with the guy who runs that culinary club on campus.”

“And?” said Guin.

“Jack said he had no idea who would want to harm CiCi, and he didn’t know about any boyfriend. And the gentleman who ran the culinary club said Ms. Rawlins was a great cook and would be missed, but he knew nothing about her personal life or who she hung out with.”

Guin sighed. More dead ends.

“Well, I guess we have to keep on looking.”

“You find out anything?” Craig asked.

Guin debated whether to mention the rumor, then chided herself.

“Apparently there was a rumor going around campus that CiCi was having an affair with Ris. She was his TA last semester, and they supposedly spent a lot of time together.”

“You okay?” asked Craig.

“Yeah, I guess. I spoke to Ris. He denied it, and I want to believe him.”

“But…?” said Craig.

“No but,” said Guin. “I believe him. But it upsets me that people would think such a thing.”

“You find out who started the rumor?”

“Yeah, a sorority sister of CiCi’s who was also up for the TA position. CiCi beat her out. Also, the girl’s boyfriend may have had a crush on CiCi.”

Craig whistled.

“Sounds like motive to me.”

“Yeah, except they were both supposedly on a bus headed to Miami at the time of the murder.”

“They could have hired someone,” said Craig.

“They’re kids, Craig.”

“Rich kids,” said Craig. “You wouldn’t believe some of the stuff I saw back in Chicago. Kids these days…”

“I’ll check out their alibi—or maybe you could? I want to speak with Sam Hutchins’s boyfriend, Denny Sumner, again. Seems he may not have told us everything. And I need to speak with Susan Hastings. She may have been following the girl, trying to obtain information about Sam’s sculpture.”

Craig shook his head.

“What is it about this island and shells that makes people crazy?”

Guin smiled.

“You going to tell me there are no crazy fish people?”

“Not the same,” said Craig.

Guin wasn’t buying it.

“Oh, by the way, I heard the autopsy report was ready.”

“How’d you hear that?” Guin asked him. “Never mind. So, can you get a copy?”

“I’ll ask.”

“Thanks,” said Guin.

“Sorry I don’t have better news.”

“That’s okay,” said Guin. “At least we’ve narrowed down the list. Most likely it was someone who lives on Sanibel or is staying here. What I want to know is whether it was a random killing, which seems unlikely, or if someone was targeting CiCi.”

“Well, let me know what I can do to help,” said Craig. “I’ll be out fishing tomorrow, but if you need me, just send me a text.”

“Will do,” said Guin.

They said goodbye and ended the call.

Guin looked down at her phone. Her message light was flashing. There was an urgent text from Shelly, asking Guin to call her.

Guin entered her number.

“Can you come over here?” Shelly asked her.

“Is everything okay?” said Guin.

“No,” said Shelly. “I have to drop off my entry tomorrow, and I’m worried I’m missing something.
